Remediation of Disturbed Land and Restoration of Natural Landscapes
Oil and gas exploration, production, and transportation can have a negative impact on land resources, including soil contamination and loss of soil fertility. The Gazprom Group implements a set of remediation and rehabilitation measures to put the disturbed or polluted land back into economic use.
While land impact is not a major environmental concern for the Group, Gazprom still places special emphasis on enhancing the reliability of pipeline systems, which helps preserve soils and other environmental components. Contaminated land restoration involves mechanical cleaning followed by chemical treatment with humic substancesNatural organic compounds that are part of soil capable of binding pollutants and stimulating natural self-purification processes., ion-exchange substratesNatural minerals and artificial materials that clean soil and water by replacing harmful ions (for example, lead or cadmium ions) with safe ones., beneficial soil bacteria and algae strains, as well as microbiological agents that help clean and heal the soil.
The Gazprom Group employs modern reclamation technologies that prevent soil erosion, stabilize landscapes, and restore vegetation. Restoration activities involve the use of mineral construction materials derived from drilling waste, geotextiles, and plant growth stimulants, as well as specially selected species of soil microorganisms that help strengthen the soil and accelerate plant growth. During construction and reconstruction of the Gazprom Group’s facilities, remediated soils are checked for conformity to environmental staandards by running soil, geobotanical, agrochemical, and other assessments.

The allocation of land for construction purposes, the expansion of the area of production facilities, and the development of fields served as the reasons for the increase in the area of disturbed land. Construction and installation work carried out under investment projects was performed in accordance with the adopted design solutions.
Both land remediation and compensatory reforestation are carried out to the full extent required and within the established timeframes.
In the reporting year, PJSC Gazprom completed compensatory reforestation (including agrotechnical measures) across 9,389.35 ha of forest land in 19 Russian regions. Total costs reached RUB 1,041 million.
