Waste Management
PJSC Gazprom's priority is to reduce the amount of waste generated by its operations, as well as waste sent for burial. This focus is formalized in the Comprehensive Environmental Program of PJSC Gazprom for 2020–2024Approved by Oleg Aksyutin, Deputy Chairman of the Management Committee, Head of Department, on November 26, 2019. and the Corporate Environmental Targets of PJSC Gazprom for 2023–2025.
The Gazprom Group ensures safe treatment of production and consumption waste and makes every effort to increase the share of recycled and neutralized waste.

Waste Handling
The implementation of advanced technologies and best available practices minimizes waste generation and enables the efficient use of waste at the Gazprom Group’s facilities.
All the Gazprom Group’s facilities have implemented sorting procedures for wastes of Hazard Classes I–V, which increases the share of waste sent for recycling. There is a ban on burial of waste containing valuable recyclable components, while waste that can be used as secondary feedstock is handed over for recycling.
All the Gazprom Group’s waste placement facilities are listed in the relevant state register. We monitor the environment and contamination levels at such facilities and within the area of their environmental impact. The Gazprom Group strictly complies with environmental regulations for waste management by complying with applicable waste generation standards and disposal limits.
Special emphasis is placed on drilling waste. The Group develops and uses low toxic drilling muds and the pit-free drilling method for the construction of wells. The drilling waste recycling technologies that produce mineral construction materials for general construction works in the course of field pre-development are increasingly being used.
At the Gazprom Group, most of the waste is Gazprom Neft’s drilling waste, Gazprom Energoholding’s bottom ash waste (solid coal combustion products generated by TPPs), as well as oil sludge mainly generated by oil and gas production and processing facilities.
Plastic, Give Up!
The Gazprom Group continues to phase out the use of disposable plastic items in its offices. PJSC Gazprom analyzes on a quarterly basis the changes in the volume of procurement of disposable plastic items, as well as the volume of plastic waste sent for recycling under relevant contracts. This initiative is a part of the Action Plan to quit using disposable plastic items in the Gazprom Group’s officesApproved by order of PJSC
Gazprom No. 8 dated January 12, 2023.. PJSC Gazprom’s subsidiaries and entities have similar plans in place.
Since 2023, all Gazprom Group entities have been running an open-ended environmental campaign Plastic, Give Up! with employees receiving points on the GID UIP for confirmed contribution in separate collection of a number of plastic fractions. The points can be used to pay for training courses, participation in sports events, and other purposes. Over 1,000 employees have taken part in the initiative since its inception.

Gazprom Group entities pay close attention to the environmentally safe treatment of oil-contaminated waste.
In the reporting year, the Group produced 73,750 tons of oil-contaminated waste (with the Gazprom Neft accounting for 80.6%), which is 12.3% less than in 2023.
The decrease in oil-contaminated waste generation is attributable to the completion in 2023 of full cleaning of sludge storage facilities at Gazprom Energo’s facilities.
In 2024, a total of 99,520 tons of oil-contaminated waste (including 23,630 tons present at the beginning of the year, 73,750 tons produced and 2,140 tons received from other entities) were in circulation, with 69,030 tons handed over to specialized licensed organizations for recycling and treatment and 2,250 tons for safe dumping.
Protecting the environment from adverse drilling waste effects is a key well construction requirement, especially in the harsh climate and weather conditions of the Russian Arctic.

In 2024, the Gazprom Group took part in a strategic session with the Main Directorate of State Examination (Glavgosekspertiza) on the design and expert assessment of ways to manage large-tonnage waste and waste the disposal of which is prohibited in the absence of external infrastructure in the areas where PJSC Gazprom’s facilities are located. Following the discussion, Glavgosekspertiza prepared minutes No. 145 dated September 25, 2024 with respective requests sent to the Russian Ministry of Natural Resources and Rosprirodnadzor.
